This time of year always marks a time when many people are either asked what they want as a gift or are looking for that cool gift item for someone. We don't tend to do 'gift guides' but this is definitely something you should check out, The Superman Files by Matthew Manning, published by Andrew McMeel Publishing back in November.

Simply put, this is an incredible book. You might have already checked out our video look (at the top of the page). You get quite a bit here. Matthew Manning is also responsible for The Batman Files, which was released in 2011 (we also did a video and pictorial look which you can find HERE). If you've seen that book, you have a good idea what to expect with this one.

The great thing about books like this is they retain the history of the character. We may be a couple years into the New 52 but you can find all the important aspects that made Superman the character we all know and love. The book is compiled by Brainiac 5 but has been "translated" by Manning.

Rather than be presented in a typical (and often boring) manner, the book comes across as more of a scrapbook of Superman's history instead of a straight encyclopedia approach. They've managed to dig up many great images and moments along with some rather fascinating pieces that really fleshes out the world of Superman.

Besides just consisting of images from different comics, a lot of the information is presented with newspaper clippings and other documents.

Along with the clippings and moments in Superman and Clark's life, there is also a ton of information about those around him. You can find out his family members, friends, former girlfriends and enemies. This makes learning about the different characters more fun.

The book does retail for $75 but you can find it online for lower prices (Amazon has it for $47.44). It has 312 pages and is oversized so you can take in and fully appreciate all the images and 'documents.'

Even though the majority of the book covers the pre-New 52 era, there is some information on what has happened since, including the beg kiss between Superman and Wonder Woman. In other words, the book is pretty up to date with what is going on in Superman's life!

This makes a great addition to you collection of comic related books. Of course it also makes a great coffee table book. Just make sure any friends that come over will fully respect and appreciate the beauty and quality of this book.

Here's a few more shots from the interior of the book:

You can read the full specs on the book at the publisher's website HERE.
