The Good

Coming out of the aftermath of Godhead, a beast unleashed from the Source Wall crashes in Zamaron, where Kyle and Carol are located. The two go on a hunt for who sent the beast there while trying to discuss their current relationship and where it will be headed in the future.

The kick off with the source wall titan falling to Zamaron is pretty cool way to kick off the issue. There were a lot of creatures that Black Hand unleashed and it's nice to see that we get a bit more in a "where are they now" scenario. Spoiler: They're dead and crashing into planets as part of someone else's plan.

The issue starts off pretty strong, up until Carol and Kyle leave Zamaron. Writer Justin Jordan explores the future of Carol and Kyle's relationship and while it's a bit heavy on the dialogue side of things, it's crafted extremely well. It moves the issue forward extremely well and feels very natural. Jordan really captures these characters voices in this issue.

On the art side of things, the pencils by Diogenes Neves, with Ronan Cliquet, inks by Marc Deering, and wolors by Wil Quitana with Andrew Dalhouse (not Andre as the issue states) are pretty fantastic. Sure, there are two groups of artists on this issue and it is mildly noticeable when they change, but the art is pretty awesome. We get some epic establishing shots featuring that cool looking Source Wall Titan and the colors from Quintana and Dalhouse are dynamite on this issue, which is something you really need on a Green Lantern book.

The Bad

Everything on this issue comes together nicely but it's just an ok issue overall. Obviously, the series is coming to a close and Jordan gets a chance to tell one more story, and there's elements here that are cool, but it falls right down the middle of the road and there's not much here that really stands out after finishing it up. Coming out of something as huge, epic, and entertaining as Godhead can be really tough and while there's lots of ways this story could go, the way it's headed here it fine but nothing that will get readers extremely pumped about the last two issues of this book.

The baddie behind this upcoming story is not someone I'm particularly a fan of. It is one of the weaker villains from Jordan's run on this book, which overall, has been pretty darn fun. He is someone that is going to be a trial for Kyle, but it's a villain we just saw previous to Godhead.

The Verdict

Where this book started and where it is at now are two insanely different things. GREEN LANTERN NEW GUARDIANS is an evolving book, which is something extremely cool about this series. However, this issue leaves the reader wanting something a bit more. The way it's set up is that we're going to have a one and done battle with a familiar face. The writing is good, the art is great, but the story is a bit disappointing. While this story has the potential to take some incredibly interesting turns, which Justin Jordan is easily capable of, this first issue falls relatively flat. If you loved Kyle's part in Godhead, then pick this one up for sure. There's some nice resolution here, but if you've fallen off the book, this won't rekindle your love for the series.
