It's no secret that Archie Comics has been shaking and mixing things up lately. We've seen the Death of Archie in the LIFE WITH ARCHIE storyline set in the future. Some of the characters are experiencing some dark (and mature) adventures in AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE and CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA. Lena Duhham will be writing a four-part story. Archie is even rebranding its Red Circle Comics imprint to Dark Circle Comics.
They're not done with the changes yet.
In 2015, the long-running ARCHIE series will be relaunched with a new #1 issue. ARCHIE COMICS #1 first started back in 1942 (Archie firs appeared in 1941's PEP COMICS #22). The series title changed to just ARCHIE with issue 114. The creative team on the new ARCHIE #1 will be Mark Waid and Fiona Staples.
Mr. Waid said his primary goal was to return Archie to a modern audience, which included restoring the contemporary attitudes that the teenagers of Riverdale had lost.
“Over the years, some of the sharp edges have been sanded off,” he said. “They are kids, and they should act as kids.”
