Each week we take a close look at comic book collectibles. That means taking them out of the package. With Big Hero 6 in theaters this weekend (see our review HERE), chances are many will be picking up some of the readily available merchandise in stores. We decided to check out the 4" line of action figures. At least we got all of them except for two.
There are seven figures you can choose from. All six members are available along with Yokai, the villain.
I didn't want to get all the figures, mainly because of the cost. The figures are actually pretty affordable compared to most other figures on sale these days. At your typical Target type stores, they cost $8.99. The Marvel Universe 3 3/4" figures tend to be around ten dollars. You'll notice there is a difference in packaging up above.
I originally bought three of the figures and then a couple more at the Disney Store. All the figures are the same. At the Disney Store I went to, they were actually $11.99. I just picked up the two for convenience sake and to add to this feature.
Baymax
If you get any of the figures, chances are you, or the young ones in your life, will want to get a Baymax. The figure is pretty simple. He has some limited articulation but enough to move him about and position him a little. The pads on his shoulders do move a little to give the impression of more movability.
He doesn't really come with any extra accessories like the others but he does have wings you can put on his back.
He's a little top heavy. His legs have very little movability but you can get him to stand. Perhaps a nice added touch would have been having his fist be removable. But at least this way you won't have to worry about losing it.
Hiro Hamada
Hiro is the main character of the movie. He's the one that really gets everything going. Because he's a fourteen-year-old kid, his figure is a little smaller than the others. The sleek design of the characters does make him look a little simple but it's a good likeness to the movie's look.
He does come with Baymax, in his resting mode.
It makes sense if you get Baymax, you'll want Hiro.
Go Go Tomago
Go Go Tomago is the tough no-nonsense character that has a taste for speed and thrills. She does show some other characteristics later in the movie. Her figure comes with snap on discs, that she uses to speed around in the movie. She can be a little tricky to stand up but once you figure out the right positioning of her ankle discs, it's a cool action pose.
It's a nice touch being able to remove the discs. It gives you more options with the figure. But having them on is a good look and sets her apart from the others.
Honey Lemon
The movie had a pretty diverse cast of characters. Honey Lemon was incredibly intelligent like all the others but also had a...different outlook on things. It appears as if she just comes with a purse. She does but it's not an ordinary purse. That's where she keeps all her various orbs that did different things. Her eyes are a little haunting.
Because of her legs and being top heavy with the hair and helmet, she won't stand on her own. All the figures have holes on the bottom of their feet so you could put them on stands, if you had any. They do not come with anything. Honey Lemon does come with a piece of purple plastic that I think is to help her stand. It does the job and I couldn't figure out what else to do with it since the picture on the packing doesn't show it.
Yokai
If you're going to buy more than one of these figures, you're going to want a villain, right? Yokai may not have been the most original villain we've seen lately but he had a pretty cool look. He's wearing black, has your typical brooding trenchcoat as well as a Kabuki mask.
He does come with an accessory. If you saw the movie (I can't remember if they really showed him in action in the trailers), you know he controls a bunch of nanobots. You can put a piece of plastic on his hand to mimic his control over them and the constructs he makes.
There is also a figure for Wasabi No-Ginger and Fred. But as I mentioned, I didn't intend on getting as many figures as I did. Who knows, maybe the collector nature inside me will want to get the other two.
The figures overall are nice. They're not supremely awesome and will want to make you scream out to all your friends about how cool they are. It is a nice thing to have these figures available right after the movie was released. The figures aren't overly detailed but have a cool-enough look and captures the movie's quality to some extent.
