The Good

The first chapter in Dark Horse Comics' big Alien/Predator crossover, PROMETHEUS: FIRE AND STONE #1, was all about introducing us to the unfortunate humans that are being thrown into this scenario and building the tension. However, writer Chris Roberson, artist Patric Reynolds, and colorist Dave Stewart's ALIENS: FIRE AND STONE #1 is a fast-paced ride that's full of blood and horror.

First and foremost, I have to praise Reynolds and Stewart's panels. The heavy use shading and rough character work -- for both the humans and xenomorphs -- is perfect for this book's atmosphere. Honestly, it reminds me a bit of Jock's work. The first panel of a human being killed hits you like a ton of bricks; it just feels right for this world and it's a stunning image that's oozing with darkness. These characters are constantly on edge and that's more than transparent with plenty of these panels. Long time fans of the franchise are sure to love some of the panels of xenomorphs, too. This team did a thoroughly spectacular job capturing their frightening designs and actions.

As for the story, Roberson throws us right into the storm. Instead of hitting us with a slowburn or a ton of exposition, an introductory caption tells us where we are and the humans are already on the run and not doing too hot. What follows is a whole lot of tension, screaming, and running -- you know, basically what you'd expect to see at some point in any story involving xenomorphs! These characters are never sure when they're safe and there's only bits of dialogue here and there which tell us the bare basics about some of them. Despite that, you can't help but feel a bit of pity as these nameless people are viciously killed by the xenomorphs and flee for their lives.

The Bad

As stated above, this one hits the ground running and is all about the suspense and horror. However, this means we've yet to see a compelling story or discover what makes any of these characters worth rooting for.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but I don't understand how that one gunman had acid splashed on him. Was the attacking xenomorph hit with a few bullets and, as it leaped past him, blood splattered his way? If so, I couldn't tell because the above panel has only one alien getting shot and it looked too far away for that blood to reach the humans.

The Verdict

ALIENS: FIRE AND STONE #1 is light on plot and character but deliciously heavy on horror and reminds us just how frightening the xenomorphs are. The story may not have that much weight just yet, but it's revealed some connections to the greater narrative and drops a hint or two which has me intrigued. Odds are you'll breeze through this read since it's basically one extended chase scene, but if you're a fan of the franchise, you'll have a good time watching these humans attempt to survive and it'll likely leave you wanting more. I mean, how can you not after the teaser at the end?
