Sam Fisher is coming to Dynamite Comics, and who better to write this book than the man whose name is synonymous with espionage and spy comics, Nathan Edmondson? He's working with Marc Laming (KINGS WATCH) on this book and he took the time to answer a few of our questions about this new book.
COMIC VINE: What's it like not only getting to work at Dynamite, but getting to work there during their 10th anniversary?
NATHAN EDMONDSON: Dynamite has been an accommodating and easy process for us since we brought the book over, and there’s no question about their influence in the comics world over the past ten years. The timing is certainly perfect with Dynamite to shine a bright spotlight on Echoes.
CV: You're primarily known for your work with characters involved in covert-ops or spying. What attracts you to these types of characters?
NE: As many times as I’ve been asked this question I never seem to have a very satisfying answer, at least not for myself. I am intrigued by the world of espionage, the men and women of combat; there’s something about their undeniable importance in the game of geopolitics that makes writing in this genre meaningful to me.
CV: How did you land this gig?
NE: Folks at Ubisoft were fans of THE ACTIVITY and directed their partner in the book Studio Lounak to reach out to me.
CV: Were you a fan of Tom Clancy's writing or the video games that came out of them?
NE: I’ve read Clancy off and on since early childhood, and his writing has certainly had an impact in how I look at and approach telling stories about defense and intelligence. I had also played several of the Splinter Cell games — I’m not an avid gamer but I play on occasion, and I really appreciate the thinking-man’s approach to the shooter that is Splinter Cell.
CV: What's going on in this new series?
NE:Sam Fisher has retired, but an old friend asks a favor, and that leads to a whirlpool of global terrorism that Sam isn’t prepared to deal with.
CV: What challenges did you have, if any, when putting this book together?
NE: The only real challenge was getting into Sam’s head and understanding him so that we could not only tell an original story with a character many readers might not have any experience with, but also represent the same man whom many gamers have “been,” thinking as, killing as, running around as Sam. It was a fun challenge and it really made us aware of the process of creating a likable character for a game franchise, where you don’t just read about the hero, but you are the hero.
CV: What is it like working with Marc Laming, who just wrapped up his run on KINGS WATCH?
NE:Marc Laming is an incredible talent who truly brought his a-game to this book. He was easy to work with and he really understood the characters.
CV: Why should Sam Fisher/Splinter Cell fans pick up this new book?
NE: Devotees will see a side of Sam that they’ve never seen before — a glimpse at his home life, into his secrets and struggles — which will augment the game experience in some very interesting ways. Besides that readers will get to experience the world and action of their hero from a totally new direction.
